Problem: Excessive vibration and noise in a light-frame aircraft, especially at cruising speed, where sound pressure readings were approximately 94 dB(A). Pilots had to wear hearing protection to be comfortable.

Problem-solving process: E-A-R recommended a solution package of damping and acoustical barrier materials, which the manufacturer offers as an optional retrofit package for end users.

Solution: The kit contains ISODAMP C-3002-50PSA sheet damping foam, which is to be applied at 100 percent coverage, to the front half of the fuselage. On the side walls, at the pilot seat area, C-3002-50PSA material is layered over SD-40PSA damping material. To control engine noise, ISODAMP C-2003-19PSA damping sheet is applied to the bulkhead behind the seat, topped with a layer of fiberglass insulation, followed by a layer of WB-10 non-reinforced acoustical barrier material. This barrier must overlap onto the adjacent fuselage skin by at least 1-inch to avoid acoustical leakage.

Result: The materials specified offer weight-efficient damping, which is key for aircraft applications. The kit, which weighs approximately 40 pounds, achieves a 15 dB(A) reduction in sound.

Potential applications: E-A-R offers aircraft soundproofing packages for a wide range of craft.

Additional problems/solutions to consider: All types of lightweight vehicles. Applications using lightweight composites.
